Honey Show

The Honey Show at our AGM on 13th October was a great success and attracted a large number of entries. At the same time we were able to revive the Bucks County Honey Show which had not been held for over 5 years. Mid Bucks members were therefore competing against the best from Chalfonts, North Bucks and High Wycombe Beekeepers.

The Mid Bucks trophies were won by:

STUCHBERRY SHIELD For best in show John Dadswell
LAURIE WEBB ROSEBOWL For most points in all classes Won jointly by Paul Monument and Jean Savigar
LAURIE WEBB CUP For best frame (class 7) Frank Rickett
PETER SMITH CUP For best wax cake (class 11) Paul Monument
W E JONES CUP For best cake (class 14) Diane Oldfield
APIARY CUP For best beginner (class 13) Jean Savigar

The Bucks County trophies were won by:

TWEEDY SKEP for the society gaining the highest number of points

Chalfonts Beekeepers

PEGGY CUP for the member gaining the most points overall

Bill Fisher (Chalfonts)

MARGERY PARKER TROPHY for the member baking the best cake (class 14)

Diane Oldfield (Mid Bucks)

JOHN RAVEN AWARD for the member with the best honey exhibit, classes 1 to 5

Bill Fisher (Chalfonts)

Congratulations to Diane Oldfield who beat all-comers with her honey cake.

The show was judged by Vivienne Brown who complemented us on the quality of the entries and said that many of them were worthy of entry at the National Honey Show. About the ones that did not make the grade she made the following observations:

The Show schedule was not read carefully enough: Honey entered into wrong class (eg: medium instead of dark or creamed instead of naturally set). Honey in the two jars not identical. Cake of wax weighing just 2oz when schedule asks for 7 - 9oz. Cake baked in 6" tin when schedule clearly states 7".

Exhibit not prepared adequately: jar of crystallised honey not stored on a level surface, so sloping in jar (perhaps a minor point, but if other exhibits are flat......). Honey not filtered sufficiently leaving traces of pollen and scum on surface. Honey extracted too soon, so a) fermenting b) not viscose enough. Jar not filled sufficiently. Exhibit starting to granulate. Wet surface and air bubbles in granulated honey class.
